Boot Camps

A wonderful opportunity has arisen. It has come about from a lot of planning and hard-work over a number of years.

What is being offered is an opportunity for children and adults in the community to attend a boot camp. These will involve a two day workshop on dismantling and rebuilding a computer. Then participants will learn how to install the software required to run the computer. At the end of the camp participants take their computers home to keep.

There will be seven of these camps on the West Coast over the next twelve months however, Wayne Aitken, who is running organising the camps, would like to know if there is enough interest in the rural areas first. These areas are Haast, Hari Hari and Reefton. To make it viable to run he needs sixteen people at each camp.

Please add any comments or questions you have to this post and Wayne will answer them for you.

He is hoping to run them in the rural areas next term. Please think about the most popular time and days for them to happen. Remember it is for adults and children.

Just a wee pointer, he could easily set up all eight camps in our local area, but he would like to offer them to the rural areas first. So it is up to you guys to make it happen if you think your community would benefit from this.

It is great to see that Hokitika have put their hands up for a Boot Camp.
One of the suggestions when talking about them was that it would be great for a father and son to do together, or a mother and daughter. I suggested to St Mary’s that they may like to arrange the participants by offering so many places to each school in their immediate region.

I hope we get some response from the rural regions before the main regions are given them.
Hurry up guys and get your questions and ideas up on here for Wayne to see.

Hi Wayne – St Mary’s would be very keen to see a Boot Camp in Hokitika and, as Bernie suggested above, it would be good if places were allocated fairly between the schools in this region. Some questions we had: if a father/son or mother/daughter enrolled (and worked on one computer between them) could this be counted as just one participant? Also there might be people interested in doing the course but not necessarily taking a completed computer home with them (eg teachers) so could there be more than just 16 participants in these cases? Where do we go from here to ensure our region is selected for a boot camp?! :-) Theresa

    Hi Theresa,
Thanks for being the first response to the bootcamp. We are very excited about the chance to deliver these camps to the West Coast where there is an interest. Just to answer your question the cap at 16 was a number that we felt would be manageable from the tutors perspective rather than hardware. We would love to see Parent / Child involvement and would consider calling that 1 unit depending on the response in the areas.
We are currently planning, and will list Hokitika as a definite site, we will know more once we have canvassed more people in the area as to the number and location for Hokitika. i will certainly keep you in the loop.
    Wayne
