SitePouch – Share Multiple Websites

SitePouch is a free to use website that lets you view multiple websites together. This is a useful tool if you want to limit your students to research only selected websites. Instead of having students typing in the URL for each website, SitePouch can create one link for all the websites.

Enter the web address for each of the websites on the SitePouch webpage – SitePouch will then generate a unique URL that you can share with students, that contains the websites that you have chosen in a stack. Clicking on one of the listed website URL opens it up while the other sites remain on the stack. Clicking on a new site in the list opens it up and hides the previous site.

New Google Search Features

Google has recently released some new search tools – “Voice Search” (for Chrome) and “Search by Image”

Voice Search for Chrome

Voice Search allows you to simply search Google by speaking the search words into your microphone, instead of typing the words. This would be useful for students who find spelling difficult or have trouble using the keyboard.

View the demo video at the link below.

Search by Image

Search by Image allows you to search Google by using images instead of words. You can upload images or use images already on the web, simply by dragging the image into the search field.  Google uses computer vision techniques to match your image to other images in the Google Images index and additional image collections. From those matches, Google will try to generate an accurate “best guess” text description of your image, as well as find other images that have the same content as your search image

A useful tool to look for similar images or try to identify where the image was taken or related content.

Nautilus Live! – Underwater Exploration

This summer, Dr. Robert Ballard and his team will launch an exciting expedition on the E/V Nautilus to explore ancient history and learn more about the ocean. The expedition will take place in the Black Sea and Aegean Sea starting in June 2010. Nautilus expedition scientists will map the sea floor, study underwater volcanoes, investigate unusual life forms, explore shipwrecks, and more.

The Nautilus expedition is special because it will offer you a chance to take part in ocean exploration history. A satellite dish on the ship will transmit live video and other data from the expedition 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Scientists on shore will use the data to take part in the expedition from afar. But you do not have to be a scientist to share the thrill of discovery. You will be able to hear what Dr. Ballard and his team are saying and view what they are seeing in real time on the Nautilus Live website. Read on to find out more about the plan for each part of the expedition. Nobody knows how the plans will turn out or what kinds of discoveries might be made. So be sure to tune in and find out!

Wolves Lair

The Wolves Lair is a learning resource that simulates the ‘Dragons Den’ TV show in class. Students research, plan, write and present their enterprising business ideas to real ‘Wolves Lair’ panels.

The programme provides a great amount of flexibility and a range of content that enables all learning areas to tap into it. It has been designed to underpin the vision of the New Zealand curriculum and promotes enterprise across all learning areas.

All material is aimed at helping implement the new curriculum, is supported by the Ministry of Education and, best of all, it is FREE! There is no cost for students or teachers.

The programme:

  • Is free. No school or student fees to register
  • Doesn’t require you to form a company or have any specific structure
  • Can have students participating on their own – they do not need to be allocated specific roles if preferred
  • Can be used in any curriculum area
  • Is incredibly flexible for teachers

Choose the Best Search for Your Information Need

This is an interesting site to help students in searching or research topics on the web.

The site is divided into sections, such as : “I need help to define my topic…”, “I need to do research in a specific discipline…”, “The timeliness of information that I need is…”, “I need opinions and perspectives…”, “I need a specific type of media…” etc and will recommend search engines best suited for that criteria
